This statement contains no private manifesto, noble cause, or political agenda. It is closer to a barker at a carnival sideshow than an advocate on a soap box. In viewing my work, look for the smirk rather than the sermon, the nod and a wink instead of the knowledge and worth.
This is not to say everything about my work is fabrication. My formula involves blending fiction and non-fiction at about a 4-to-1 ratio, sometimes to the consistency of Play-Doh and sometimes to the haphazard mix of a Boiler Maker. I rarely tell a complete lie about a piece of work, but I often tell the story with my fingers crossed.
Some of my materials are easily recognizable, but not intentionally. I don’t like to list each ingredient, since that’s a bit like a stage magician revealing the mechanics of a trick, and where’s the magic in that?
Those who have influenced my work are a mixed lot, including Kurt Vonnegut, Leonard Cohen, Timothy Leary and Robert Louis Stevenson.
